The pewa is traditionally used to repair and strengthen a crack in wood—joining what has been separated and allowing it to continue with renewed strength.
This design features four pewa, representing four organizations on the windward side whose work and relationships are part of Papahana Kuaola’s story.
Look closer, and the line being “mended” is not a crack at all. It is the kahawai flowing through Heʻeia, connecting the design from mauka to makai.
Together, the pewa and kahawai represent connection, restoration, and the relationships that have strengthened this place over the past 20 years.
Created in celebration of 20 years of Papahana Kuaola at Waipao, Heʻeia — 2006–2026.
